Procedure of planning a fashion shoot

  • Work out a good concept based on who the client is, the purpose of the shoot and their demands.
  • Create a mood board of inspiring ideas of clothing, accessories, mood and style for team members to relate to.
  • Create a storyboard for planning the shots with drawings, like a comic book with sketches visualizing the different shots.
  • Go location scouting if not studio session. Based on mood board and concept, do some research for suitable places to do the shoot.
  • Make a shot list based on concept and storyboard, contains a time frame, what equipment to bring, all the team members, what to shoot and the location
  • Choosing a model, preferably from a modeling agency that fits the concept
  • Appoint a stylist, for selecting the right props, clothing, and accessories for the shoot
  • Appoint a hair and make-up artist who will work within the frame of concept and mood board
  • Preparations, bookings, permissions, catering – basically anything that can make the shoot go smoothly and uninterrupted.

The Stylist’s duties

A stylist is selecting the right props, clothing, and accessories for the shoot. They work closely together with the client and photographer and use mood boards and storyboard as a frame for their ideas.

Duties as a photographer

The photographer is art directing the set, making the stylists, make-up and hair artists prepare the model and environment look according to concept and mood boards. Making decisions on lighting, composition and work closely with the model to achieve the right expressions and poses for the planned shots.
